Was listening to ABC radio earlier today and heard this website being discussed so thought I'd join. I'm 56 and was made redundant a little over 12 months ago and have been finding it very hard to get work ever since. Must admit, it's been a real mental struggle every day for me since being made redundant. I've applied for about 20 jobs in the past 9 months and every single one of them has come back and said "you're way too experienced". I've been working in the legal field since I left university in my early 20s and would never have thought I would be in this situation because employers hire on experience and skill set and don't care about age--how wrong and naive was I? I keep telling myself ageism doesn't exist in this day and age, but the harsh reality that it does is starting to kick in. Anyway, it's important to stay positive and remain open to all opportunities. Look forward to watching this website develop and evolve--it really does have the potential to play an important role for older people looking to make a valuable contribution through continued work. Cheers all.

Hi Kieran. Welcome to workr and thank you for sharing your story. Not an easy thing to do. I'm absolutely sure you're far from alone. I also love that you talk about staying positive and remaining open to all opportunities. It may not come as much of a consolation, but more and more people are now talking about this issue and things really are beginning to change, albeit slowly at the moment. As our community grows, so will our voice in a world where we have so much to offer. Again, welcome... Simon
